Engineering for Boaters is a one-day, hands-on workshop created for first-time canal boaters who want to understand and confidently manage the essential engineering systems on board. Designed for beginners, the day breaks down technical topics into clear, practical explanations and demonstrations, helping participants learn what each system does, how it works, and what basic checks every boater should know. No prior engineering experience is required, just curiosity and a desire to feel more self-reliant on the water.
Throughout the day, we explore the core onboard systems that keep a boat running comfortably and safely. Sessions cover electrical fundamentals, including batteries, wiring basics, charging methods, and fault-finding tips. We then look at power systems such as solar installations—how they integrate with existing electrics, how to size a system realistically, and how to manage onboard energy use. Heating systems are also explained in detail, with particular focus on diesel heaters: how they operate, routine care, and how to diagnose common problems before they escalate.
The workshop concludes with a practical introduction to engine maintenance tailored to canal boats. Participants learn simple but essential tasks such as daily checks, fluid monitoring, belt inspection, filter awareness, and seasonal preparation. By the end of the day, attendees leave with a solid foundation in boat engineering, a checklist of routine care practices, and the confidence to maintain their own vessel safely, efficiently, and independently.
